BERTHA MCCORMICK OBITUARY
MANCHESTER -- Bertha Brooks McCormick, 93, wife of John S. McCormick, Jr., died peacefully at their home in Manchester Friday, Jan. 19, 2007. Bertha McCormick, known as "Bird" to her friends, was born in Sewickley, Pa., on April 12, 1913. Her father Joshua Brooks served in the U.S. House of Representatives for the State of Pennsylvania. She graduated as Head of School from Miss Porter's School, Farmington, Conn., class of 1931.
After World War II, she and her husband moved to Pawlet, where they operated a dairy farm. As an environmentalist, she was appointed by Governor Davis to the commission for the inception of Act 250 and served as chair of the Vermont chapter of the Nature Conservancy. In 1984 she received the Oak Leaf Award from the Nature Conservancy in recognition of her efforts on behalf on land conservation and outstanding leadership to the Vermont program. She also received the Outstanding Conservationist Award from the Bennington County Natural Resources Conservation Districts in 1969.
During her lifetime, she was president of the Vermont Achievement Center in Rutland and the Bennington County Humane Society. She supported numerous organizations. She was a lifetime member of the National Wildlife Federation, New England Antiquities Research Association, Early Sites Research, Vermont Institute of Natural Science and the Audubon Society. For many years, she was a member and supporter of the Southern Vermont Art Center and the Friends of Hildene in Manchester.
Bird's passion for the outdoors was shown in her interests which included photography, bird watching, botany, skiing, horseback riding, gardening, hiking, fishing, and golf. She received several awards for her photography and was a member of Ekwanok Country Club.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, John; a son ; two daughters; five grandchildren; four-great grandchildren.
