Samuel Jay Baker was born August 15, 1896, in Spalding, Nebraska, the son of Byron and Margaret (Howsmon) Baker. He received his education in the Greeley County schools. He married Vesta Mae Taylor on June 12, 1918. They were the parents of Ivan R., Margaret L., Louis A. and Charles E. Baker. Samuel and Vesta were later divorced. He married Edna Magdalena (Lage) McQuillen on June 20, 1942. They were the parents of Ruth A. and Dale G. Baker. Edna preceded him in death on July 3, 1964. He married Goldie Lovella (Mapel) Ward on December 20, 1964, in Noel, Missouri.
