János Pehm was a poor farmer who grew wine grapes on his lands. He fathered six children, three of which died in infancy. His eldest son, József Mindszenty (1892 - 1975), became a priest, Bishop of Veszprém, and ultimately Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary. Arrested by the Communist regime in 1948, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for treason against the Communist Government the next year. When the Soviet Union invaded Hungary in 1956, Cardinal Mindszenty was granted political asylum at the United States Embassy in Budapest. He lived there for the next 15 years, unable to leave the embassy grounds. Mindszenty spent his last years in Austria, passing away in Vienna in 1975. In 1991, his remains were repatriated to Esztergom.
