WILLIAM WAYNE METCALF SR.

William Wayne Metcalf Sr. (1927-1974) was the son of James Carl Metcalf Sr. (1894-1967) & Annie Lee Rumbough Metcalf (1897-1940). Husband of Jimmie Faye Lester Metcalf (1931-2001). They were married on April 23, 1949. They were married 25 years when he died from a massive heart attack at the age of 47. His death was sudden and the family suffered much grief.

Father of William Wayne Metcalf Jr. & Patricia Ann Metcalf & Barry Dale Metcalf & Mark Kane Metcalf. Grandfather of David Wayne Metcalf & Tara Ann Metcalf Pressley & Jesse Nathan Metcalf & Jacob Monroe Metcalf.

World War II Navy Veteran. Served in the Pacific Campaign. He was part of the Liberation of the Philippines and the invasion of Okinawa. Served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1951. He lied about his age to join the Navy two days after he turned sixteen years old. He turned seventeen during the Liberation of the Philippines and celebrated his eighteenth birthday on Okinawa at the end of the war. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal & the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal & World War II Victory Medal & Philippine Liberation Medal.

He used to tell me, " Son, I got my education in the South Pacific. " I guess he did. He was my Dad and I knew I could count on him. I loved him.

His funeral was held at New Morgan Hill Baptist Church in Candler, North Carolina where he was a member. The Revs. John Wilkins and Charles Sprinkles officiated. His pallbearers were Jim, Larry, Bobby and Jimmy Metcalf, Rick Cummings, Leon Caldwell, and David Ledford which are all his nephews. He was buried at the Forks of Ivy Baptist Church Cemetery where he was a former member and where his father, mother, grandfather, grandmother and brother were buried. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina assisted the family.
