She was the daughter of Job Gardner and Maria Brenton (Boggs) Olden. Her father was a merchant in Princeton, New Jersey, later becoming treasurer of Princeton College.

She is descended from William Olden, her great, great, great grandfather, who together with Clarkes and Worths, settled the part of Princeton to Stony Brook to the west side of the village.

Her Uncle, Charles Smith Olden was governor of New Jersey from 1860-1863.

Her descent is traceable through the Dunhams to Edward Fuller, who was on the "Mayflower", and the Widow Ford who came on the "Fortune", in 1621, and married Peter Browne.
