John Hertel, aged 91, Civil War veteran, who was well-known in Sheboygan and Manitowoc Counties, died today at St. Nicholas hospital, after having been ill for a week. Mr. Hertel was one of the pioneer cheese-makers of this county. Born in Alsace April 18, 1842, Mr. Hertel came to his country at the age of eleven years with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sabastian Hertel and their five children when the great influx of Teutonic immigration from Europe was very noticeable. The family settled in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County and the children were reared in an atmosphere of sturdy thrift and old world industry.
For some nine months toward the close of the Civil War, Mr. Hertel served, having enlisted in Company D, 34th regiment. Most of his service was in Kentucky. Mr. Hertel was married March 4, 1867 to Miss Mathilda Bodenstab, daughter of Dr. Henry Bodenstab, who was a pioneer physician originally from Hanover, Germany. After their marriage, the couple went to live on a farm in the Town of Herman where they tilled the land for a number of years until Mr. Hertel started in the cheese making business in 1879. He continued at this trade for twenty years, when he retired and the couple came to Sheboygan to reside.
In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Hertel celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary. Mrs. Hertel preceded her husband in death on Sept. 11, 1923. Since then he had been a resident of the Anna M. Reiss Home for the Aged.
Mr. Hertel was always a member of Gustavus Wintermeyer Post, GAR, serving as adjutant for many years.
Survivors are; four sons, Robert and Paul of Spring Valley, Phillip of Chilton and John Of Reading Minn., two daughters, Mrs. William Herz of Sheboygan and Mrs. Fred Wolters, Sheboygan Falls, 35 grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Besides his wife, two daughters and a son preceded Mr. Hertel in death, Mrs. Mary Herr of Plymouth, Mrs. Mathilda Ackermann of Manitowoc and a son, Louis who died at the age of three years.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at the Anna M. Reiss Home with a requiem moss at Holy Name Church. Rev. Philipp Dreis will officiate and interment will be made in the family lot in Wildwood cemetery.
