Garland owned and operated a family farm located about 2 miles west of New Richmond, Indiana.

Garland chose the location for his cemetery plot to be near the well-pump about half way back on the west side of the west drive. He said that way everyone would come to see him.

NEW RICHMOND - Garland W. Oppy, 80, of 1025 N. County Road 500 W., died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Regency Place of Lafayette where he had been a patient since April 4. He had been ill since having a stroke in February 1982.

He was born May 27, 1920, near New Richmond, where he was a life resident and 1938 New Richmond High School graduate. In 1982, he retired from farming.

On Aug. 15, 1941, he married Ruthanna Cox in Lafayette, and she survives. Mrs. Oppy had been a secretary at New Richmond Savings and Loan and manager at the New Richmond branch of Linden State Bank.

Mr. Oppy formerly served as sexton for the New Richmond Cemetery and on the New Richmond Savings and Loan board of Directors.

Surviving with his wife are a son, John Foster Oppy of Glenview, Ill. and a daughter, Diana Sue Hammer (husband: Jim) of Cherokee, Iowa.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday at Hahn Funeral Home, Linden. Graveside service 2 p.m. Sunday in New Richmond Cemetery, the Rev. Scott Meade officiating. Surviving are 2 grandchildren, Brett S. Swann (husband: Mike) of Monroe, Ga., and Darrell M. Hammer (wife: Tricia) of Noblesville. Preceded by 3 brothers, Leland, Tom and David.
