DEATH OF CAPT. J.W. BURRESS
Baldwyn is again called upon to give up one of her most prominent and influential citizens, Capt. J.W. Burress, who for many years has been among the foremost leaders in everything, pertaining to the religious, social, political and business welfare of our town, died very suddenly at his home yesterday (July 19) at 7 o'clock. He had just finished his breakfast and walked into the hall and seated himself on a sofa when the summons came. He lived but a few moments.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Savage, of Jackson, Tenn., after which the remains were carried to the Masonic cemetery for interment, followed by the largest procession of friends witnessed in Baldwyn for many years.-Baldwyn Indicator.

Captain Burress was a model christian gentleman and the whole country are sad at this good man's death. He had few superiors in life; firm, brave, true, honest, upright, kind and gentle in disposition, loved and respected by relatives and friends who are pleased to speak of him as the noble man, Capt. Burress.
He was born of South Carolina parentage, and was about sixty seven years of age. His nature was refined, becoming a christian gentleman. He early did his duty faithfully in Church and State. His counsel was sought and respected as being truly reliable. In the civil war he was a brave Confederate officer and in the legislative halls of Mississippi his voice was for the right in every instance.
Capt. J.W. Burress' influence, counsel and work will be sadly missed by North Mississippi. Truly a good man gone.
