Betty Arlene Bower, 80, Chanute, Kansas, died Friday, October 8, 2004, at Chanute Healthcare Center.

She was born February 29, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Harry M. and Bess (Caldwell) Shepherd.

She graduated from Chanute High School and Chanute Junior College and attended Pittsburg State Teacher's College in Pittsburg, KS.

She taught at Rural School for nine years, then in Galesburg, KS, for two years. She was co-founder and teacher at Chanute Play School for 26 years.

She was a memer of First United Methodist Church and Women's Circle, where she was present and past president. She taught Builder's Sunday School, was a member and past president of Holly Study Club, and of Church Link Today's Concerns. She was active in Retired Teachers Association, where she was past president and legislative chairperson.

She enjoyed traveling in the United States and Europe, and reading, hiking, and shopping.

On May 1, 1945, she married W. Fred Bower in Chanute, Kansas. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Dr. Robert B. bower, Pleasant Prairie, WI; an adopted daughter, Arlene; a brother, William "Bill" Shepherd, Independence, KS; a sister, Helen Schmoker-Smith, Denver, CO; and a grandson and 2 great-grandchildren;

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Shepherd, and a sister, Kathryn DeMoss.

Funeral services will be October 13, 2004, at First United Methodist Church, Chanute, KS, the Rev. Larry E. Myers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery on east 14th St., in Chanute, under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel.

Memorials may be left to Cherry Street Youth Organization, Chanute, Kansas.
