According to Annie's brother, John Kelso, "It seems agriculture did not suit Ernest". He farmed the homestead for only one season, then took a job driving a team of horses from the railway station to the Lake Louise hotel in the Rocky Mountains. In 1910 the family, together with brother Alfred, moved to Chase, BC. The men worked for the Adams River Lumber Company, Ernest worked as a tally clerk and Alfred a mill hand. On Nov. 10, 1910, Alfred died of natural causes, while working. Ernest and family lived in Chase until 1926 and that same year, they moved to Hammond (Maple Ridge), BC, fifteen miles east of Vancouver. Ernest worked for the Hammond Cedar Company until his death.
Ernest died, aged 80, on March 13, 1956 in the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, B.C. He is interred, with Annie, in Maple Ridge Cemetery, Maple Ridge, BC.
