U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the law department of the College of William and Mary, Virginia, in 1813, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He was prosecuting attorney for the fifth Virginia circuit in 1818 and a member of the State constitutional convention, (1829-30). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1845. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1846 to 1847). Resigning from politics due to ill health, he lived in retirement until his death.
