Ralph William Baker was born in El Paso, Texas on October 19, 1912. He was the third child of Bush Wrod Baker and Stella Anna Cairns Baker. He moved to Clifton when he was three and spent the rest of his life there. He met Edith Kennedy when she came to Clifton to teach in 1938. They were married in Ajo, AZ July 1, 1939. Fly and Edie had two children, a son and a daughter. Fly, as he was affectionately called, worked for Phelps Dodge Mining Corp. for 40 years as a gold and silver assayer. He was a past Exaulted Ruler of the B.P.O.E.(Elks) Lodge, a member of the Greenlee County Golf Club, Board of Directors of Greenlee County Historical Society of which he was treasurer.
He enjoyed playing golf and visiting with his many friends. He was well liked by both the old and young. He was greatly missed. At the time of his death, Fly was survived by his wife, Edie, both children, five grandchildren and his older sister, Blanche Baker, and one brother Anson. He requested that his ashes be spread over Greenlee County, the golf club and the town of Clifton Which he loved.
