He was born in Creston, Wirt County, son of the late Dr. David and Emma Robey Stewart. He was a steamboat pilot on the Kanawha River and in later years a self-employed painter. He attended the Creston United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Stewart of Hillsboro, N.C., Ronald Stewart of Creston; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Snyder Stewart, in 1954; one daughter, Lillian Bennett; a son, Shirley Paul Stewart, Jr.; five brothers and three sisters.
