Shirley Paul Stewart, 82, Parkersburg, died Sunday evening at the Pick Memorial Hospital in Charleston following an extended illness.

He was born in Creston, Wirt County, son of the late Dr. David and Emma Robey Stewart. He was a steamboat pilot on the Kanawha River and in later years a self-employed painter. He attended the Creston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Darrell Stewart of Hillsboro, N.C., Ronald Stewart of Creston; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Snyder Stewart, in 1954; one daughter, Lillian Bennett; a son, Shirley Paul Stewart, Jr.; five brothers and three sisters.
