When Gerald arrived in Vietnam 20 July 1968, he was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 1st Marines Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Meade River with India Company in the vicinity of Route 4 and 5 kilometers west of Dien Ban. when the Marines encountered hostile forces. Gerald was wounded 4 December 1968, as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire.
After recovering from his wounds at the Hines VA Hospital, Gerald was medically retired from the Marines 21 July 1969.
Gerald died 23 August 1985, as a result of complications due to the wounds that he sustained in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. His name was added to the Vietnam Wall on November, 1987.
Survived by his parents, Gerald Robert and Mary Claire Abbenhaus Sr, and his siblings; Daniel, Francis, Mary, Ann and Phillip all of Missouri.
