Lloyd served as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner in the 534th Bomb Squadron, 381st Bombardment Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was assigned to his unit as a member of the William Skoglund crew, but flew with other various crews including primarily flying with the John Martyniak crew in June 1944.
On 13 July 1944, Lloyd was assigned to fly with the John Houston crew on B-17 #44-6148 “Smashin’ Thru” which crashed shortly after take off for Munich, Germany. The aircraft lost two engines during assembly and came down in a railway cut at Oaker Hill Bridge, Great Yeldham, near Halstead, Exeter, UK. Moments after the plane crashed, the bombs onboard exploded killing all men onboard except pilot John Houston and co-pilot William “Bill” Scruggs. Both men were ejected from the plane before the explosion.
Lloyd was “Killed In Action” in this crash. The bodies of the men killed could not be identified and they were all buried together initially in England. In June 1949, Lloyd and five of his crew members were permanently buried in a mass grave in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska.
S/Sgt. Jackson was awarded the Purple Heart.
