Ann Jane McElroy Cullen is the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Prunty) McElroy. Michael is from the hamlet of Cornanure, in the town of Ballybay, County Monaghan, while Catherine, based upon documents my brother Jimmy had researched, is from the small hamlet Annayalla, Monaghan, just northward, outside the town of Castleblayney. The village's church, St. Michael The Archangel R.C. church, is in the parish of Clontibret. The newer church was built during the early-mid 1920s, along the Dublin to Derry Road. The newer portion of N2 (built c. 2007), the Castleblayney to Clontibret By-Pass, now sidesteps the church.

Ann Jane's proper first name is Anna Jeanette, shortened to Ann Jane, same as her paternal aunt. She was called by the name "Annie" (or "Anne", same pronunciation), probably as her dad's sister was called, as well as the same as her mother's oldest sister Anne Prunty, who was named after Catherine's paternal aunt. It was Catherine's aunt Anne Prunty that married Larry McElroy (1860-1922), the oldest brother of Anne's father Michael. Refer to Catherine "Sarah" Prunty McElroy Memorial 102160521 for further information. Also see Memorial No. 102161743 - Mary "Mae" (nee Haskins) Cullen-McElroy-Corrigan as Mae married Larry & Anne's oldest son Johnny (Memorial# 102161743). For Anna "Annie" Prunty McElroy, see Memorial No. 106433775.

Her parents, Michael (b. 04/09/1879 – d. 03/19/1962, buried 03/22/1962) and Catherine (b. 1891 c. – d. 12/25/1960, buried 12/27/1960), had eight children: Mary Murphy (b. 03/09/1913 - d. 07/18/2001, Memorial# 103772843), Katherine Horan (b. 02/02/1914 - d. 11/24/1993, Memorial# 103993951), Lawrence McElroy (b. 1916 - d. 10/09/1970, Memorial# 103515933), Ann Cullen (herein memorialized), Margaret (b. 09/21/19 – d. 12/07/13, Memorial# 121374851), Michael McElroy (d. 1 yr. old infant buried 05/19/1922, Memorial# 104337442), Charles Jos. "their Buddy" (03/03/1922-11/05/2010, Memorial# 102918551) and Virginia O'Keefe (b. 06/12/1925 – d. 08/30/1982, Memorial# 104309258).

Our brother Jimmy reminded me that our mom, Ann, was born when her family was residing at 105 Christopher Street down in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Her mother a janitress, her dad a farrier. I have since obtained a signed and stamped Certificate of Baptism. She was baptized as Anna Jeannette McElroy by Rev. W.C. Humphrey at the Church of St. Joseph, 371 6th Avenue on the 22nd of July 1917. Her Godfather is John Morgan, while her Godmother is Mary Morgan. I noted with interest that her mother had spelt her own name as Katherine rather than Catherine the way it generally shows up, despite the fact that her proper name is Sarah Catherine.

The Church of St. Joseph is down the block from where Christopher Street intersects with Waverly Place from the east, with the church being off the corner to the south, on 6th Avenue. So the family would have walked a block and a half from their residence eastward along Christopher Street, cross 7th Avenue, and then, about a ¼ block, making a right onto Waverly Place. At the time the small triangular shaped park that is there now was non-existent.

Anne spent her childhood growing up in the Long Island City neighborhood of the borough of Queens, New York City. By 1920 the family was residing at 109 3rd St., off East Ave., in the Hunterspoint area of Long Island City. She and her siblings had much older cousins living nearby at 580 Hunters Point Avenue. These were the offspring of her dad's oldest brother, by nearly a score of years, Larry and his wife Annie. Unfortunately, those cousins would meet with imminent fatalities. Refer to Anne's dad memorial for further details by clicking the link below; also, read his brother Larry's memorial number 104660597 for supplemental specifics.

By 1930 the family had moved to 123 50th Avenue, still in Long Island City (LIC), by Vernon and Jackson Avenues, just a few blocks away from their previous residence. By 1935, 17 to 18 year old Anne and her family were residing at 34-07 Broadway in the Queensborough area (LIC-Astoria borderline) of Queens, where they would reside to the 1940s. So along with her older sisters, they were close to the shops along Steinway Street.

Anne married Jas. Edwd. Cullen (I) on January 16, 1942. My brother Jimmy tracked down their wedding ceremony to St. Francis De Sales in Riverside, California. Jimmy noted that our Dad was temporarily stationed there before being deployed to the Aleutian Islands, which extend westerly from the northerly Alaskan coastline toward Russia and Japan.

Anne gave birth to five boys: Jas. Edwd. A. (II), Lawrence Vincent E. (09/11/1948 - 11/25/2012), Daniel Michael J., Kevin Francis P. and Francis Jos. J. All were born in Manhattan, NYC, with the exception of the two youngest (Flushing Hospital, Queens County NYC), and reared during childhood in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens County, NYC, NY.

The family were parishioners of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Woodside in Queens County, New York. Jas. Edwd. A. (II) was baptized 5 Oct. 1947, Francis J. Cullen (Jr.) and Mary E. Murphy (nee McElroy) Godparents, Lawrence Vincent E. was baptized 3 October 1948, John J. McElroy (Jr., Uncle Johnny) and Catherine Horan (Aunt Kay) Godparents. Jimmy and Larry made their First Communions together on the 30th of May, 1955 and both were Confirmed (Soldiers of Jesus Christ) on the 30th of April, 1957; Jimmy took the name Aloysius with Thos. F. Bergen his sponsor, while Larry took Eugene with Richard H. Kirwar his sponsor. Daniel Michael was baptized 12 March 1950 with Uncle Joe Murphy and Aunt Margie Licks his Godparents, he made his First Communion May 9th, 1957, and on May 11th, 1959 he took the name James for his Confirmation with Paul Kane his sponsor. Kevin Francis was baptized 6 April 1952 with Uncle Buddy McElroy and Aunt Mae (nee Cullen) Napoleon his Godparents, he made his First Communion May 9th, 1959 and he was Confirmed on May 16th, 1961 taking the name Patrick with George Hennessy as his sponsor. The youngest, Francis Joseph was baptized September 19th, 1954 with Uncle Jimmy Horan and Aunt Hilda McElroy his Godparents, made his First Communion on May 26th, 1962 and was Confirmed a year later on May 16th, 1963 taking the name James with Daniel Martin his sponsor.

She is Grandmother to: (Jas. E. II) Christine, Jacqueline (McMahon) and Jas. E. III; (Lawrence V.) Anya Sinead and Patrick L.; (Daniel M. Jas. Sr.) Daniel M. Jas. Jr., Natalie-Anne Sinead; (Kevin F.): Ann Marie, Kevin F. II; and (Francis J. Sr.) James, Frankie Jr., Terence M. Cullen.
