Samuel M. Barr was born April 2, 1847. He married Selina Barker January 1, 1875. He came to Oregon with the family April 12, 1859, and was married in Portland.

Mr. Barr worked in the mines of California for a few years when a young man, and got a start in business. He is a man of good business ability, and never found it any trouble to make money. He owned the Barr Hotel, a large four-story building -- one of the largest in the city -- on the corner of Sixth and Glison Streets, which he sold recently, besides other property in Portland. He is a man of good habits, and himself and family attend the Presbyterian Church of Portland. He is a Republican in politics.

They have been spending their winters in Los Angeles, on account of the children, one of whom is delicate. To them were born four children, two boys and two girls.

Grace Selina Barr -- 5 was born in 1881.
Elsie Susan Barr -- 5 was born in 1883.
Harry Grant Barr -- 5 was born in 1885.
George Earl Barr -- 5 was born in 1887.

The children are all bright and studious. Elsie has carried off some important prizes in the Marlborough School, Los Angeles, the last two years. Harry was with his father the past summer at Cape Nome, Alaska, and is a good little worker. This is one of the quiet, orderly homes where it is a pleasure to visit, as the writer knows from experience.
