One of two children born to Utah natives Harold Sharp DAYNES (1881-1937) and Agnes Leona "Leona" (DAYNES) CROWNOVER, nee Taylor (1883-1965), Harold -- know as a "Jack Mormon" despite his prestigious LDS family heritage and "Mormon faith" note in his obituary -- had two children (born 1932 & c.1935) by his first wife, who died by 1941. The children were raised after 1942 by his second wife, Mertie (Smith) ROTEN (1917-1958), who had two children of her own by her previous marriage.

Harold was a 45-year resident of San Bernardino at the time of his death at age 74. He worked as painting contractor in an era when Southern California suburbs like those around the San Bernardino saw an explosion of home building, and later got into boat sales. He lived for many years at 2498 North Arrowhead Avenue; he and Mert also kept a trailer on a lot they owned at the beach in Oceanside, San Diego Co., CA. Harold was also a member of B.O.E.P. #36 (Elks Lodge).

After his beloved Mert died in a plane crash at age 40, Harold kept an oil portrait of her in his home for many years (possibly the main photo on her FindAGrave.com memorial page). He supposedly remarried 2 or 3 times, though only one of these has been verified (July 19, 1975, in San Bernardino, to Kathryn Ann "Kay" TRAHAN, nee Kozer). Harold is buried next to Mertie, and one row from his mother. He was survived by his wife Kay; three sons, Michael A. Daynes and Dennis Daynes (both of San Bernardino) and John Daynes (of Benton, California); one daughter, Patricia Lewis (of California); 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Information from his sister-in-law Connie [Smith] Turnbow, census records, Ancestry.com, and SAN BERNARDINO SUN obituary (July 23, 1983).
