OBITUARY Iron County Reporter Nov 30 2005 "Obituaries: Benjamin Johns"
ESCANABA-Benjamin Hartley Johns, 86, passed away peacefully at home Oct. 30, 2005.
He was born Sept. 27, 1919 in Negaunee, the son of Eli and Bessie (Pearce) Johns. He grew up in Stambaugh, graduating from Stambaugh High School in 1937. He was a member of the high school football and basketball teams. He also played American Legion baseball and was a member of the 1936 Iron River team that won the U.P. Championship. While playing in the state tournament in Detroit, their team was befriended by the 1937 New York Yankees, thus beginning his fan loyalty to that team. He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 7, 1941. He served with the 94th C.A. in North Carolina and was sent to Australia aboard the Queen Mary. After being transferred to the Memorial Division of Graves Registration, he served as an embalmer at the Fourth General Hospital in Melbourne. He later was sent to New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. He was seriously wounded in a plane crash in New Guinea and rescued by natives, who carried him and the only other survivor for six days down the mountain back to Army control. He was awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, and six Overseas Services Bars.
On July 6, 1944 he married the former Leila Schroeder at Christ Anglican Church in Melbourne. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1946 and was a member of Pi Sigma Eta Scholastic Honorary Fraternity. He was a licensed funeral director working with the Anderson-Johns Funeral Home of Gladstone until one year ago. He was a member of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association for 57 years. He owned and operated Johns Memorial Marker Company for many years. He was a member of Delta Lodge 195 F&AM, Francis Moore Consistory Shrine of Marquette and the Delta Shrine Club. He was a past president of the Escanaba Junior Chamber of Commerce and past district chairman of the U.P.J.C. He served as president of both the Gladstone Rotary Club and the Exchange Club of Escanaba. He was also a member of the Escanaba Rotary Club, Lake Bluff Country Club, American Legion, and the VFW. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church for 59 years and served multiple terms on the vestry, both as treasurer and later as senior warden when the new church was being built. He was both an avid reader and a bridge player and played in the Tuesday Escanaba Bridge League. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Dorothy; and brothers William and Norman.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years; daughters Suzanne (Michael) Lisle of Lincolnwood, Ill. and Pamela (Jim) Levandis of Sycamore, Ind.; grandchildren Michael Lisle, Jr. (fiancé Nicole Reisdorf) of Madison, Wis. and Sarah Lisle of Chicago, Ill.; sisters Muriel Christian of Wild Rose, Wis., Lois Temple of Ledbetter, Kent., Betty Moczynski of Milwaukee, Wis., Doris Robinson and Lucille Halls, both of Iron River; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Escanaba with the Rt. Rev. James Kelsey, Bishop of the Diocese of Northern Michigan, and the Rev. Rayford Ray officiating. Committal services and veteran's services followed at Lakeview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in the name of the deceased may be directed to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church for the Perpetual Memorial Fund.
