Ray S. Ashbery, a Trumansburg attorney and member of the state assembly from 1949 to 1962, died Friday, May 17, 1974 at his home here.

Mr. Ashbery held several important assembly posts, among them being secretary of the former Diefendorf Commission, organized to plan highway financing and to re-organize the former state dept. of public works. He was chairman of the joint legislative committee on Unemployment Insurance and was a member of the powerful Judiciary and Education Committee.

Mr. Ashbery was educated in the Buffalo public schools and received the B.S. degree from Cornell in 1925. He also attended Cornell law school. He practiced law in Trumansburg sine 1935 and was a past president of the Tompkins County Bar Assn.

A former mayor of the Village of Trumansburg, he was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses and past president of Trumansburg Rotary Club.

Surviving are his wife, mrs. Jean Bradley Ashbery; two daughters; a son; a granddaughter; a brother, Edwin R. Ashbery of Eden.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
