Franklin O. Stiles, Sr. was a tinsmith and prominent businessman who was married three times. He moved to Troy, New York from Jefferson County, New York in 1859 and worked in a hardware business with Elihu G. Akin, initially as a clerk, and eventually as the hardware store owner.

He was married to his first wife Jennie F. Hauze on 25 Nov 1862 at the First Universalist Church by the Reverend James Minton Pullman, the brother of George Pullman. Franklin and Jennie had two children named Nettie and Franklin O. Stiles, Jr.

His second wife was Alice Warner, of Berne, New York, and they were married 5 May 1874. She died young of typhoid fever and was buried with her infant child.

His third wife was Elizabeth 'Libbie' Morton on 2 Oct 1876 in Brunswick, NY and they had a daughter named Helen Halladay Stiles.
