Mildred Minna Lawrence of Kiel passed away peacefully on December 14, 2012, at the Calumet Homestead in New Holstein at the age of 91. She suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage as a result of a fall the evening of December 7, 2012. She is survived by her son Robert Lawrence and daughter-in-law Dianna of Waukesha, a niece Barbara Adelmeyer of Lomira, another niece Sandra Gleason of Santa Ana, California, and a nephew Mark Lawrence of Great Falls, Montana. She was proceeded in death by an older sister and by her husband Erland "Squirrely" Lawrence in 1995.
Mildred was born the daughter of Joseph Stoeger, Jr. and Elizabeth Karstaedt Stoeger on August 28, 1921 in New Holstein. She spent most of her life in Kiel and graduated from Kiel High School in 1939. Shortly thereafter, she met her future husband, Erland, while skating on the Sheboygan River in Kiel. They were married at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Kiel in June of 1943 while Erland was home on leave from the U.S. Army. Mildred then followed him back to Camp Cooke, California (now Vandenberg Air Force Base) and worked as a cashier in the post exchange cafeteria before Erland was deployed to Europe to fight in World War II. During the war, and for many years thereafter, Mildred was employed as a secretary at Stoelting Brothers in Kiel. She also worked for a short time at Siefert Manufacturing, also in Kiel.
Mildred was an active member and also an employee of First Presbyterian Church in Kiel. She sang in the choir, handled the church's bookkeeping for a number of years, and was also the church secretary for a time.
While Mildred dearly loved her family and friends, she also loved to garden. She and Erland kept a large garden at their house on Meggars Road and, later, at her condominium in Kiel. In her later years, she enjoyed getting together with her many friends to take walks and to play cards. She will be dearly missed by those many friends and by her loving family.
Funeral Services for Mildred will be held at 11:00am on Friday December 21, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church (727 6th St. Kiel) with Rev. Cheryl Lepak officiating. Family and friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 4:00pm until 7:00pm and at the church on Friday from 10:00am until the time of services. Burial will follow in the Kiel City Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her name for First Presbyterian Church.
