Son and heir of Sir Edward Hastings and Muriel Dinham, daughter of John, descendant of Geoffrey de Plantagenet. Grandson of Hugh de Hastings and Anne le Despenser, descendant of King Edward I and King Henry II.

He married with papal dispensation dated 21 April 1434 as they were related in the 3rd and 4th degree, Anne Morley, daughter of Thomas Morley, 5th Lord Morley and Isabel de la Pole. They had three sons; Sir Hugh, Sir Edward, Robert, Isabel, wife of Thomas Bosvile and Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Hildyard.
