William Jackson Chandler, Jr. HENRY, SC - William Jackson Chandler, Jr., 91, of Henry, SC passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at his home. Mr. Chandler was born in Henry, SC, on June 27, 1921, the son of the late William Jackson Chandler, Sr. and the late Thomasena Mellichamp Phillips. He attended Union School at Rome, SC, for 10 years and graduated from Hemingway High School. During high school he farmed with his father and measured land for the ASCS (USDA). He attended Clemson College and studied vocational agriculture. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, having flown 62 combat missions with the 12th Air Force over Italy, France, and Germany. Mr. Chandler began farming on his own in 1946 and taught vocational agriculture to veterans at Indiantown School for three years. He was a founder and the first pre-sident of Williamsburg County Farm Bureau. He served as president of Hemingway Poultry, Inc., and floor manager of two tobacco warehouses in Hemingway, SC. He served on the original Board of Directors of Wellman Country Club and on the building committee for its first club house. He owned and operated Mingo Swamp Farms, Inc., a tobacco/livestock farm which later became a forestry operation. A life-long member of Union United Methodist Church, he held positions as lay leader, trustee, official board member, and cemetery committee member. He was a member of the Indiantown School Board of Trustees and the Williamsburg County Board of Education. He was on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank of Florence and later served on the founding board of the Hemingway Branch of Williamsburg First National Bank. Mr. Chandler was preceded in death by his son, William Henry (Ann Rodgers) Chandler, late attorney of Hemingway. Mr. Chandler was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Margaret Nelson Chandler; a daughter, Claire Chandler (Ralph) Harrell of Hemingway, SC; grandchildren, J. W. Nelson (Anna) Chandler of Charleston, SC, Martha Chandler (Rob) Westbrook of Richmond, VA, Daniel E. (Jessica) Harrell of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Ann Paisley S. Chandler of New York, NY; and four great-grand-children, Fisher J. Harrell and Ellie B. Harrell of Murrells Inlet, SC, William H. J. Chandler of Charleston, SC, and Margaret B. Westbrook of Richmond, VA. Funeral services, conducted by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, December 21, 2012, at Union United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, December 20, 2012, from 5:00PM until 7:00PM.
