Henderson Davis

Henderson Davis, for many years a well known resident of Jackson township, died at his home on Carmel Ridge, last Saturday night, March 10th.

Mr. Davis was born in Washington county in 1864. His mother was a well known doctor in that part of the state and Henderson inherited her love for plants and for growing things. It was his mother's knowledge of medicinal plants that first caused him to turn his attention to the plant life of the fields and forests.

When the state bought the first forest reservation at Henryville in 1901, Mr. Davis was made foreman and for a number of years had entire charge of the place. Later, he was transferred to Madison where he had entire charge of the state orchards at the Southeastern Hospital.

In 1912 Mr. Davis moved to Brown County and for nearly twenty years was one of the foreman at Hickory Hill Orchards. At the time he left Hickory Hill he bought a small fruit farm on Carmel Ridge and he had been engaged in improving this place in recent years. Only a day or two before he died he had been busy staking out some land for a new peach orchard.

Mr. Davis was noted for his exceptionally quick wit, for his unfailing good humor and for his remarkable conversational powers. As foreman at Hickory Hill he had met many famous persons from all over the country and without exception they all liked him, always remembering him and on later visits always asked for him if he failed to appear promptly. He had the happy faculty of making friends with everyone and his passing on will be felt by his friends in many states.

Mr. Davis is survived by the widow, Mrs. Josephine Davis, one brother, William Davis, of Bloomington, two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Humphry, of Kansas, and Mrs. Elisa Palmer of Henryville. All of his ten children are living. They are, George Davis, Indianapolis; Maude Kelly, Indianapolis; Harry Davis and Ray Davis of Cottonwood; Bessie Rund, Hickory Hill; Pearl Belser, Madison; Lula Meeks, Madison; Ida Mann, Franklin; and Hazel living at home.

In addition there are twenty-nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Henryville Tuesday at 2 PM. Burial was in Bunker Hill, near Henryville.
