HIGH POINT – Mrs. Joyce Johnson Gibbons, 92, entered into her eternal home in the early hours of Dec. 17, 2012, to be reunited with her beloved husband and daughter.
She loved her Lord and tried to live her life to please him as best as she could. She was born in Surry County on Nov. 16, 1920, to the late James A. Johnson and Luria Chandler Johnson.
She was a stay-at-home Mom until her daughters were grown up and then worked in the hosiery industry until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of Mitchell River Primitive Baptist Church in Dobson, NC.
On May 16, 1936, she married the love of her life, Dillard Oliver Gibbons. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Elder Dillard Gibbons Feb. 3, 2002, and her daughter, Juanita Gibbons Barber April 6, 2012; two brothers, Gilbert A. Johnson and Claude O. Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanie Sams Shaw and her husband Thad of Archdale; Four grandchildren; Vicky Sams Johnson and husband James of Archdale, NC; Steven (Sonny) Sams and wife Lynn of Jamestown, NC; Michelle Barber Burhenn and husband Lee of Randleman NC; Kristal Barber Granger and husband Thomas of Topeka, Kansas; Step-Grandaughter Linda Shaw of High Point, NC., Step-grandson Thomas Shaw of Clayton NC. nine great-grand children and three great great grandchildren; Two brothers, Alton Johnson and wife Joetta of Kernersville, NC, and Dewey Johnson and wife Nancy of Archdale, NC; Sister-in law Ruth Johnson of High Point, NC.
Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Sechrest Funeral Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue in High Point by Elder Steven Nichols, Elder Wayne Gibbons, and Reverend Donnie Oates. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service.
