Former area resident victim of hotel disaster
A former Pittsburg area resident has been officially identified as one of the 111 persons killed in the collapse of two sky-walks at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City Friday, July 17.
Juanita P. Bedene, 60, of Overland Park, was attending the Tea Dance with a friend, Marjorie Morris, at the time of her death. Both died in the accident.
She was born in Girard, Oct. 28, 1920. She moved to Chicago. She later lived in Frontenac and Pittsburg, before moving to Overland Park.
She attended Pittsburg State University. She taught school in Lamar, in 1951. She also taught at the Santa Fe Trail School, Overland Park, the past 25 years. She served as assistant principal many years.
Memberships include the National Education Association and the local K-NEA and the Valley View Methodist Church, in Overland Park.
Survivors are three brothers, Ralph Longan of Woodland, Calif., James Longan of Frontenac, and Richard Longan of Oak Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Pat Guilhempe of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Friskel Chapel in Frontenac. The Rev. Tom LeClerc, will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the Friskel Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed.

Juanita was the daughter of Ruth Trout but was adopted by Ruth's sister Georgia Louise and her husband Leo Bedene.
