Miss Tyler was Assistant Secretary to the San Francisco Library Board of Trustees and in a report to the Mayor on 3 Aug 1920 the following statement was written: "Miss Martha T. Tyler, after a service of more than forty years with the Library has resigned. Your Board has extended to her an expression of sincere gratitude for her most loyal, intelligent, conscientious and invaluable service to the City, a service which should be recognized in substantial form were there provisions in our City Charter. Pensions are given to Fire, Police, and School Departments, and it is hoped that some plan may be devised whereby those who have given so freely of themselves to the service of the community may hope for reasonable recognition in their declining years."
