When the war for American independence ended, Reuben Hatton found himself in South Carolina. He thought it beautiful & saw promise there. An orderly young man, he knew he must learn a trade & associated himself with a French hatter by the name of Balleau. In very little time he was making hats, and very much in love with his new wife, the hatter's daughter Joanne Mary Balleau.

They married 30 September 1783. By all accounts, they had a remarkably happy marriage of 58 years. Mr. Hatton survived his wife by five years. A listing of their children is shown on Mr. Hatton's memorial.
