Was Organizer of San Antonio's First Baseball Team

John C. Phelan, 114 West Maple Street, died yesterday afternoon at the Santa Rosa Hospital. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 5 o'clock at St. Mary's Church.

Mr. Phelan was born in Pennsylvania in 1859, but had lived for many years in San Antonio, and was engaged in the marble and tile contracting business here. He was well known as one of Texas' oldest baseball players, having organized the first team that ever played in this city. He has been manager of many different baseball teams and served as umpire in the Texas baseball league. He was a brother of Dick Phelan, a National League player, and one of the first baseball players to win a National reputation in the United States.

He is survived by his father, Patrick Phelan of San Antonio; two sisters, Katherine Phelan of Denver, Col., and Mary Phelan of San Antonio and three brothers, James and Thomas Phelan of San Antonio and Edward Phelan of San Diego, Cal.

Interment will be made in St Mary's Cemetery, under the direction of Hagy & McCollum, undertakers.
