He married Stella Blanche Maples in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on February 18, 1927 and they had three daughters, Dorothy Lee, Peggy Jean and Leona Francis.
Shorty worked for Fisher Body (later a division of General Motors) until he contracted crippling arthritis, in his 20's, and couldn't continue to work. Because of that, he and his wife Stella switched roles, she went to work and he took care of the home.
Although frequently in pain, Shorty was a happy and fun guy to be around. Very seldom did you ever hear him complain.
