Marguerite Van Dyke Hamill, 91, of Biloxi, MS died on Thursday, August 11, 2011. Mrs. Hamill was a longtime resident of Biloxi. She born in Chicago, IL on November 3, 1919 to John Raymond Van Dyke and Myrtle Rena Bell. 1940 brought a Bachelor of History degree from Tulane University and Civil Aeronautics Administration pilot's license but no driver's license.

She married C.C. "Tex" Hamill in April, 1941, together they had successful businesses in Chicago and on the MS Gulf Coast. For 30 years they published the "Down South Magazine", capturing the coast from New Orleans to Mobile. Marguerite managed the business end while Tex tended to advertisers, art work and photography. Along the way, they had five children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Marguerite donated the fruits of their efforts to the MS Gulf Coast Community College in the over 43,000 photographs of the Gulf Coast between 1950 and 1980. Many of the photos are of landmarks destroyed by Hurricanes Camille and Katrina. In addition, copies of the Down South Magazine were made available for scanning. A rare fine of "Down South of the Air" tapes were also donated. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Ocean Springs, MS and Daughters of the King. Long-time member of the Altrusa Club of Biloxi.

With passport stamps from Antarctica to Africa, Bangkok to Brazil, Turkey to Egypt and points beyond, she lived to travel and explore.

Our mother and grandmother has traveled the world over but to us she was our world, the guiding light no matter how lost we got on the way.

She is preceded in death by her husband, C.C. "Tex" Hamill; daughter, Joyce Hamill Ladnier; sister, Ruth Van Dyke Nelson; brothers, Jack Van Dyke and Richard Van Dyke.

Mrs. Hamill is survived by her children, Margo Winstead (Sam), Penny Parker (Wayne), Jon Hamill and Cindy Hamill; grandchildren, Cheryl Parker Smith (Adrian), Ginger Winstead Carmichael (Lee), Susan Parker (Bob), Sally Winstead Williams (Rusty), Dwayne H. Ford (Christy), Amy Ford Fore (Joey), Joshua Ladnier, Erica Nicole Hamill; great-grandchildren, Devvon Mitchell, Amanda Williams, Geoffrey Williams, Jordan Fore, Aedan Ford and Drake Fore.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: St. John's Episcopal Church, 705 Rayburn Ave., Ocean Springs, MS 39564.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
