BERKS COUNTY'S GOLF QUEEN DIES AT 63 AFTER 50-YEAR REIGN.

Betty Fehl-Fegely, the queen of women's golf in Berks County for 50 years, died Tuesday night in Reading Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. She was 63. Fehl-Fegely of Perkiomen Ave., Reiffton, dominated local amateur gold circles since 1936, capturing 50 major women's golf championships and countless other club titles. She was inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1978. Her storied career consisted of 33 Berks County Women's Golf Association championships, 15 Central Pennsylvania Women's Golf Association crowns, and two Pennsylvania Amateur championships. She began golfing at the Reading Country club when she was 9 and her local supremacy started in 1936 when she won the county title as a 13-year-old, beginning a streak of four straight championships. Two years later, she became the youngest person to win the Central Pennsylvania Championship. There was no county championship competition from 1940 through 1947, but in 1948 she picked up where she left off, starting another streak of four victories. The only setback in her early county competitions was in 1952, when Eleanor Morganstern won, but Fehl-Fegely rebounded in 1953 to begin a 20-year reign as the county titleholder. In 1973 she did not defend her title, but in 1974 she returned to recapture the crown. Finally in 1975, a young prospect named Betsy King, who now is among the top golfers on the women'a professional circuit, had to go 20 holes to capture the Berks honors, and in 1976 Noreen Uihlein, a former Pennsylvania Amateur champion won. Fehl-Fegely was back on top from 1977-79, and won her 50th major championship in 1981. After her 15th Central Penn title in 1978, Fehl-Fegely said, "When I was younger, people told me I should have tried profesional golf. But I like the home life and I didn't want to do all that traveling and live out of a suitcase. I've been fortunate to win and it's a pleasure." She was a former president and longtime member of the Central Penn association. Her two state championships were in 1950 and 1965. Born in Reading she was a daughter of the late Paul B. and Florence M. (McKentley) Fehl, and named Elizabeth M. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Before Marrying in 1979, she and her mother operated the Shillington Kiddie Shop, a children's apparel shop that was on Lancaster Avenue for 23 years. Surviving are her Husband, Howard S. Fegely; two stepdaughters, five step-grandchildren, and 11 step-great-grandchildren. The Henninger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
