Reuben was 1 of 10 children born to Isaac Oakes, Jr. & his wife, Amy (Martin).
Reuben moved with his parents & siblings to Claiborne Parish, LA, in 1840. He married Margaret A. (Scarborough) on November 27, 1855, at Clairborne Parish. Reuben died during the Civil War, sometime between 1862 & 1865, leaving a wife & 3 children.
Their 3 children-all born in Claiborne Parish:
1) John L., b. 1856, m. Molly (Collier) in 1885; 2 children: Lawrence & Tullis; John was a wealthy planter in Claiborne Parish, owning 1,300 acres
2) Lucy, b. 1859; m. Mr. Langford
3) Reuben L., b. 1862; m. Ida (Bridgeman) in 1883; 2 children: Guy & Daisy; Reuben was also a prosperous planter, owning 1,000 acres in Claiborne Parish; in 1888 he established a mill in the parish
3) Lucy, m. Mr. Langford

On December 17, 1858, Joshua James Patrick purchased a slave from Ruben Oaks along with land in or near Haynesville, Claiborne Co, LA. Joshua enlisted in the Confederate army Sept. 15, 1862, in Claiborne Parish; he was killed during the Siege of Vicksburg, MS, on June 13, 1863.
*It has not been confirmed this is our Reuben M. Oakes but more than likely it is the same person
