Woman Dies Awaiting Aid

High Drifts Stall Rescue Attempt

A Sick woman died in a car in front of her Troutdale home before rescuers could fight their way through high drifts Wednesday evening.

Dead on arrival at Gresham General Hospital was Mary Eaton, 63, Troutdale.

District 10 fireman related that waist-deep snow drifts turned the incident, normally a routine first aid call, into an hour-long ordeal.

Drifts kept the fire rescue car and an ambulance from approaching closer than 1,500 to 2,000 feet from the home, on Ne Hensley Road near Charry Park Road. A four wheel drive vehicle with chains carried firemen to within about 300 feet of the house. They carried Mrs. Eaton by stretcher to the ambulance.

The death was apparently natural, according to the Multnomah County medical examiner’s office. Mrs. Eaton apparently had been suffering ill health. Relatives were placing her in a car to take her to the hospital when she collapsed.
