James was the son of William T. and Mable J. Shepherd. He married Jean Wilma Jarvis. He was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division and was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on September 10, 1950 and died the following day. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
