EVA JANE HUME MASON – was born in Moundville, Wisconsin, on January 12, 1883, the daughter of James Hume and Esther Russell Hume. She attended the Moundville School and sang in the choir of the Moundville Church. She further attended the Academy at Endeavor and taught in the Moundville School in 1901 and 1902. In 1907 she was united in Marriage to Frank E. Mason of Moundville and shortly there after, they left for Canada where they remained for two years. They then returned to Wisconsin and farmed near Briggsville until 1920. They then moved to Montello, Wisconsin where they resided until 1950. In 1950 they moved to Chicago where she lived with their son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Paul Davis, and Mrs. Mason remained with her daughter until the time of her death. To this union were born five children, four of whom are living. Vivian, Mrs. Gus Bloch, of Wausau, Wisconsin; Esther, Mrs. William Huebner, of San Diego California; Annie, Mrs. Curtis Kenitz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Maxine, Mrs. Paul Davis, of Chicago. A son, Ross H. Mason of St. Paul, Minnesota, preceded her in death and her husband, Frank, passed away in 1964. She leaves also seventeen grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren. Mrs. Mason had been quite well until January 12, 1970, her eighty seventh birthday anniversary, when she fell and fractured a hip. After some time, she recovered sufficiently to be up daily in her wheel chair, to read her papers and to write to her children and friends. From her window she watched children going to and from school and was keenly interested in the young people, her own grandchildren and great grandchildren and the children of the many younger friends who came to visit her. A generation gap did not exist between Mrs. Mason and the younger generations. In her conversations with them she would recall many of her own lifetime experiences. But also wanted to know what each was doing and what they intended to do that day or week or month and after a visit she would often comment on what Pepper was doing, where Bill and Rose were going, how busy Jean must be with her large family and what a nice family Ross and Frances had. She would sometimes start her day by commenting on the activities of Grace, Pearl, Siss, Judy, Lorraine and her much loved Ruth. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren would often send pictures of the little ones and would say, "Well, they are cute, but I don't think any of them are quite as cute as my children were! One of her twenty year old friends is to be married in June, and she often mentioned what a beautiful bride she would be and that she hoped her fiancé was worthy of her, but would hasten to Add, "No man was ever as good as my husband!" Her great love for him never wavered and following his death she said that it was her tremendous faith in God and the devotion of family and friends which enabled her to carry on. On February 6th she suffered a stroke from which she scarcely rallied and on February 13th, in her own room surrounded by her flowers and much loved photographs of family and friends, she passed away, at the age of 91 years and one month. One of her grandchildren said that everyone who knew Grandma sort of felt that she was immortal, mostly because of her great interest in all around her and her indomitable spirit. Thus, today, with thanks to God for having allowed her to be with them for many years, but with a tremendous sense of loss, her family and friends gently return her little body to the soil she loved and to the area she knew best, but they know that her great Spirit is united with the one she loved best and with St. Francis they know that it is in dying that she has been born to eternal life.
