Alice D. Green was born to John Green of New York (mother unknown) and sister to William H. Green. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1849. Her brother William was born circa 1847 also in Pennsylvania. She and her father and brother were living in Mansfield, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1880 and met her future husband, John Backhouse, a carpenter, who immigrated from England in 1883. They married on September 8, 1886, in Pittsburgh and moved to Los Angeles, California around 1890. The 1900 Los Angeles census shows them under the name of John J. and Alice D. Backus with his mother, Maria J. Backus living with them. Alice lived with her husband in Los Angeles until her death in 1922.
