From The Indianpolis Star, Monday March 15, 1976 page 20: "Weir Cook Veteran Recalls Changes, Modern Electronic Gear Bolsters Air Traffic Controllers. Lawrence Virgil Kidwell's career (as an air traffic controller) began at age 21 while he was serving as a switch board operator at a United States Air Force base in Great Falls, Montana. His first cotrolling job was at Maxwell Air Force base at Montgomery,Alabama.(1956) From there he went to Cincinnati to work for the Civil Aeronautics administration and then to Indianapolis."
He was the first man to ever retire after 25 years as an active air traffic controller. He only retired then to keep from walking out with his friends in the Air Traffic Controller walk-out in the 1980's. He said that he signed an agreement to never strike against the US Government who signed his paycheck. His death came six months after his retirement.
Larry was the son of Lawrence Virgil Kidwell Sr. and Mary Floy Greenwell, both of Indiana and was one of eight children. Two of his brothers were killed in action in World War 2 and a sister was fatally struck by a speeding truck. He never married. He is probably best known as quite the jokester and was well liked by his many friends.
