C. Francis Sampson, age 95, died on Saturday, December 23, at Lakeside at Willow Valley, Willow Street. Death was due to natural causes.
Born in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Charles and Laura B. Transue Sampson.
He was the husband of the late I. Mae Staples Sampson.
Mr. Sampson graduated from Dickinson college with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology.
He worked as a chemist for Allied Chemical for three years, Dupont Ammonia Corporation for two years, Sharpe and Dohme for six years and for Sun Oil Company as Senior Chemist for 27 years. He retired in 1970. During the depression he also worked as a social worker for the state of Pennsylvania.
Since 1934, he was a mason and helped found the Albert Thatcher Hanby Lodge
767 in Prospect Park, PA. He served as the Second Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the Sunoco White Apron Club, The Philadelphia Consistory and El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix.
In addition, he also participated in the Springfield Little Theater, acting in several plays in Springfield, Ridley Park, and Aladdin.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Springfield Community Concert Association and a member and officer in the Media Kiwanis Club and founding member and officer in the Lake Havasu City Kiwanis Club.
For 15 years, he was a member and officer in the Lake Havasu Gem and Mineral Society and also was elected President of the Literacy Council and Certified Tutor for the National Affiliation for Literacy Advancement.
Hobbies included golf, tennis, bowling, lapidary, photography, choir, and various music-related activities and travel.
He was a Methodist by faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret E. of Lancaster, and two sons: Richard A. of Haerth, OH, and Robert A., of Panama, FL.
He had played the piano and organ professionally and as a hobby. He was a member of the American Guild of Organist, Philadelphia Chapter, and had traveled extensively.
Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend the funeral from the Funeral Home of Fred F. Groff, Inc., 234 W. Orange St., Lancaster, PA Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Masonic service will be held at 7:45 p.m.
Interment Thursday in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.
Friends are invited to a Life Celebration at Groff's on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m.
In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be sent to American Diabetes Association, 630 Janet Ave. Lancaster, PA 17601.
