As a teenager she had her coming out ball and made her debut in Minneapolis. She graduated from Wells College in 1909, and while in college she was as athletic as she was intelligent, playing for the Wells all-girls basketball team.

For a brief time after college she worked for the Visiting Nurse Association, but she would soon be married and after marriage she was not gainfully employed but instead devoted her energy, dedication, and love to her growing family.

She met her husband, Sam, just after college through a mutual friend of the families. They were married in Helen's parents' house in Minneapolis and began their family in Minneapolis and had their first two children there.

They moved to Hobson, Montana about 1917, a little town in the center part of Montana. She became very highly regarded in the Hobson community, an active member of the church and frequent host for social gatherings at their house.

They eventually moved to Seattle and bought home. There was always a lot of music in their home: Helen played the piano, Sam was a very good singer, and every Sunday night they spent time together singing. All the kids took piano, they sang in choirs and were good on harmony, and the girls sang as a trio quite often.

Sam and Helen joined with friends in buying vacation property not too far from Seattle. A summer cabin was built and for years this was the focal point of many happy times, drawing family from all around the country. Later it would be the place to which children, their spouses, and grandchildren would come for regular reunions.
