Jonathan R.FAIRBANKS was mustered on 14 AUG 1862 into Company C of the 16th Maine Infantry. Gen. John Reynolds was his Commander, he was in action at Antietam. They were beaten at Fredricksburg. At Gettysburg, the 16th Maine was one of the last to leave its position. At this time he was captured and sent as a prisoner to Richmond, VA., paroled on 25 AUG 1863. After returned to his unit he was in the Battle of Wilderness, and the Battle of Laurel Hillls, where he was wounded. Three weeks latter back in action at Cold Harbor, and in August the Battle of Weldon Railroad, where he was wounded again. 25 May 1865 he was discharged at Washington DC. He returned to Maine, then moved to Boston, Mass. in 1868.
"During the war of the Rebellion, he was corporal in Co. C, 16th Reg. Me. Vols., and a prisoner at Belle Isle, Richmond. He has been a resident of Boston many years, and is a member of the firm of Fairbanks & Co., bottlers. Married, in 1871, Wilma, daughter of Horatio and Mercy (McCaslin) Hutchins, of Penobscot, Me. She was born Oct. 13, 1849, and is third in descent from William Hutchings, the last New England survivor of the Revolution."
