FAIRMONT - Funeral services for Edgar F. Custard, 96, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Burial will be in the Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery in Fairmont with full military graveside rites by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and Martin County VFW Post #1222.
Edgar passed away Friday morning, Dec. 28, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Edgar Franklin Custard was born Nov. 6, 1916, on a farm near Bartlett, Neb., the son of Freeman and Mary (Bruner) Custard. He attended country school and public school in Bartlett, Neb.. As a young man, Ed moved to Fairmont, Minn., where he began working various jobs. He then worked for Railway Motors in Fairmont, working there for 37 years before retiring in 1978.

On April 6, 1941, Ed was united in marriage to Margaret Cornell at the Salvation Army in Fairmont, Minn. Together the couple made their home in Fairmont where they were blessed with six children:?Dwayne, David, Dorene, Margaret, Gayla and Judy. They were fortunate to celebrate 38 years of marriage before Margaret passed away after a battle with cancer on Jan. 24, 1979. Ed would find love again and was blessed to meet and marry Vera Andre at United Methodist Church in Fairmont on July 19, 1980.

Ed served his country proudly, entering the U.S. Army on Dec. 3, 1942. He received his basic training at Camp Claiborne, La., and was later stationed at Camp House, Texas. On Dec, 16, 1943, Ed received his honorable discharge and returned home to Minnesota.

Ed was a proud member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and also the Eagles Club, both of Fairmont. He loved horses and fondly remembered days from his youth and working with teams of horses and breaking horses. Ed had a special place in his heart for the sand hills of Nebraska, the area he was raised. He enjoyed dancing, reading and visiting with friends and family. He will be greatly missed by those that loved him and called him friend.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Vera Custard of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Dwayne Custard and his wife, Karen of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; David Custard and his wife, Peg of West St. Paul, Minn.; Dorene Luhmann of Fairmont, Minn.; Peggy Nelson and her husband, Richard of Granada, Minn., and Gayla Miller and her husband, Jim of Fairmont, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dan Custard and his wife, Mim of Elmwood, Neb., and Phil Custard and his wife, Pat of Omaha, Neb.; three sisters, Sarah Donavon of Lakeville, Minn., Virginia Graham and her husband, Bob of Lincoln, Neb., and Louise Fritz of Lincoln, Neb.; sister-in-law, Darlene Custard of Bartlett, Neb; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, in-laws and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Mary Custard; wife, Margaret; daughter, Judith Ann Saunders; an infant daughter, Debra Lynn Custard; son-in-law, Harland Luhmann; brother, Bill Custard; as well as other family members.
