Monticello

Ruth Bird Lambert, 83, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 27, 2012. Visitation: 4-7 PM, Sun. Dec. 30 at Wilson Funeral Home, Monticello. Funeral: Mon. Dec. 31 at 2 PM at Monticello UMC, visitation at the church at 1 PM. Interment: Bahala Chapel Cemetery, Tryus, MS.

Mrs. Lambert was born in Sicily Island, LA on Oct. 16, 1929. She grew up in LA and MS, spending most of her lifetime near Oma in Lawrence county, MS. In preparation for her calling to teach, she received from the Univ. of Southern MS, a BA in Education and Psychology, (1975) and a Masters in History (1978). She taught elementary and high school at Wesson Attendance Center and in Monticello schools, 1980-1994. She had a special gift for relating to young people, and engaged in the nurture and development of their characters. Her enjoyment of history led to her memberships in the DAR, the MS Historical Society and the Bahala Chapel Cemetery Association. She was a hunter who appreciated the outdoors.

Mrs. Lambert was a member of Monticello United Methodist Church. While living in Biloxi for 25 years, she was previously a member of Leggett Memorial UMC. She was active in the United Methodist Church for over 60 years on local, regional and national levels, in various teaching and leadership capacities at each level. She was appointed as delegate to the MS Methodist Annual Conference for numerous years. During her two terms as President of MS United Methodist Women, she was delegate to the policy-making SE Jurisdictional and General Conferences of the United Methodist Church. She taught countless mission studies at local churches around the state, and at the UMW Annual School of Missions, officiating as Dean and Assistant Dean of the latter. She also served at the South Atlantic Regional School of Christian Mission. She had a heart of servanthood to the Lord in every aspect of her life.

Mrs. Lambert was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Elbert S. Lambert; her parents, Eldred and Ida Belle Conn Bird; and her sister, Sandra Bird (Mrs. Jerry) Bullock. She is survived by her son, Bert Lambert of Lawrence county; her daughter and son-in-law, Miriam Lambert and Albert D. Malone, Ridgeland; grandsons, Daniel Malone and Shea Malone, Ridgeland; brothers Grady E. Bird (Betty), Laurel, and Paul N. Bird, Sr. (Margie), Meridian; sisters, Margie Bird (Mrs. Marshall) Douglas, Sontag, and Bobbie Lea Bird (Mrs. Kenneth) Kaiser, Natchez; and many nieces and nephews.
