William tragically died in a prairie fire while coming home from Osborne, Kansas on horseback in 1872. Part of his skull was discovered decades after his death. None of his remains were given a proper burial nor does he have a headstone. William's 2nd great grandson Verlyn Lee St. Clair has possession of his skull cap inside of a glass cookie jar at his home.
