Dr. Phillippi entered the Civil War with Co. B of the 29th Virginia regiment as lieutenant. The last two years of the war he was chaplain of his regiment. During the war he was captured twice an each time he escaped and was never recaptured. After the war he returned to Wytheville.
At time of his death, he left one sister, Miss Jane Phillippi, and brothers, John Phillippi and Christopher Phillippi; of Wytheville, and Andrew J. Phillippi, whose home is in North Dakota.
