James G. Lydon, 85, of Upper St. Clair, husband for 54 years to Mary ann (Brown) Lydon, and father of Kate Lydon, died Tues., December 25, 2012. Jim first became interested in maritime and naval history during his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, Boston. Later, graduate work at Columbia University, New York focused his attention on the colonial era. A native of Boston, Jim was a professor of History at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh from 1960 to 1987. He held research grants from the Harvard Business School and the American Philosophical Society. In 1967, he pursued research in Spain under a Fulbright-Hays grant. Among other books, he authored "Pirates, Privateers and Profits" by the Gregg Press in 1970, and articles were published in American Neptune, Business History Review, Duquesne Review, New-York Historical Society Quarterly, Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, and Catholic History Review. Family will receive friends at Beinhauers, 2828 Washington Rd., McMurray, on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, MA at a later date.
