Carpenter, Edwin David: (1901-1996)

"Memorial service for longtime former Davenport resident and retired vocational agriculture teacher Edwin David (Carp) Carpenter will be held Saturday at the Davenport First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member.

Mr Carpenter, 94, died April 7 in Portland. He was born on April 7, 1901—Easter Sunday—on the family farm near Ethan, SD, the 10th of 11 children of Edwin David and Olive Blackman Carpenter. His parents moved from Michigan in 1882 to homestead on 160 acres near Ethan, then in 1912, they moved to the Bitter Root Valley in Hamilton, MT, where they farmed.

Dave graduated from Hamilton High School, then received a bachelor of science degree in vocational agriculture from Montana State College.

He married Dorothy Susan Sunderland in Opheim, MT, on Nov 28, 1930, and he always said she was the best thing that happened to them. The Carpenters had two children, Edwin David, Jr, who was a professor of horticulture at University of Connecticut, and a daughter, Ruth Menicosy of Portland…

Mr Carpenter was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 1986 and his son Edwin D in 1991. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Don Menicosy of Portland; his daughter-in-law, Susan Carpenter of Mansfield Center, CT; a sister, Eunice Vial of Hamilton, MT; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews."
