John T. was born at Cushing, Oklahoma, the son of Roy Davenport and Martha Empo Langston Kirk. He graduated from the West Plains High School with the Class of 1939. On February 22, 1947 he was married at West Plains, Missouri to Ola Mae Hall. On September 3, 1994, he was married at West Plains, Missouri to Juanita "Tooter" Adams.
John was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Marines and was captured on Wake Island and spent four years in Japanese Prisoner of War Camps. He served for twenty-eight years as the Howell County Collector, had been named the St. Louis Post Dispatch Soldier of the Year, and West Plains Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.
John and Ola Mae had four children, John Jr., Becky Lott, David and Steve.
John was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.
