John was born in Lima, Ohio, the son of Ferdinand and Malinda Binkley. He enlisted in the Union Army September 3, 1863; served in Company H of the 9th Ohio Cavalry and in Company E of the 38th Ohio Infantry. Starting out as a Private, he was later promoted to Sergeant. He mustered out July 20, 1865 at Lexington, North Carolina.

By 1870 he and his wife, Anna, were living in Chicago, Illinois where his occupation is listed as a printer.He and Anna had at least three children: Leroy, a son born in Illinois in 1876; Lavergne, another son born in Illinois around 1886 and a daughter, Lena M., born in Illinois around 1869. Leroy remained single and died in 1918. Lavergne was also single when he died in 1933. Lena (also known by Mary) was married to a Mr. Wilson who died before 1900. She then married William Guy Hill in 1903 in Chicago. They had two daughters, Adelaide and Ina.
